Tamatem’s Acquisition of Playable Factory: Pivoting from Game Publishing to an AI-Driven Gaming Ecosystem

In a move that signals a deeper transformation than mere geographical expansion or product diversification, Jordanian gaming powerhouse Tamatem has announced the full acquisition of Playable Factory, a global leader in interactive advertising.

This deal effectively redraws the company’s position within the gaming industry’s value chain, transitioning it from a content publisher to an integrated tech player that controls distribution, growth, and advertising tools simultaneously.

Founded in Istanbul in 2018, Playable Factory has rapidly built one of the most prolific interactive ad platforms in the gaming sector. The company has produced over 90,000 interactive ads, serving major global gaming firms and reaching more than 30 billion impressions. What sets this platform apart is not just its scale but its performance; it relies on “Playable Ads” that allow gamers to trial a game before downloading it.

This model has proven to significantly boost conversion rates compared to traditional advertising, with reports indicating up to an 8x improvement in conversion, alongside a tangible rise in user retention and long-term customer value (LTV).

Conversely, Tamatem approaches from a different vantage point within the ecosystem. Established in Jordan in 2013 by Hussam Hammo, the company initially focused on publishing mobile games in Arabic, addressing a clear void of localized content in the market. Over more than a decade, the company has successfully published over 70 games, achieving more than 300 million downloads with an active user base exceeding 3 million monthly, solidifying its status as a prominent player in regional game publishing.

However, the significance of this deal lies not in the history of either company, but in their synergy. By acquiring Playable Factory, Tamatem is not merely adding an advertising tool to its portfolio; it is effectively entering the “Growth and Distribution” layer of the gaming industry—the very layer that dictates User Acquisition (UA) costs and profit margins across the sector.

This integration means the company is no longer solely dependent on publishing; it now owns a critical part of the infrastructure that determines a game’s success in reaching users and achieving scale.

Strategically, this step represents a clear shift toward an “Integrated Platform” model. Tamatem aims to consolidate content (games), distribution (publishing), advertising (Playable Factory), and payments (Tamatem Plus) into a single ecosystem.

This level of vertical integration has historically been the exclusive domain of major global gaming giants rather than regional publishers, making this deal a turning point for the company’s standing in the industry.

More crucial is the technical dimension related to Artificial Intelligence. The company views this acquisition not just as an operational addition, but as a direct entry point for building an AI-driven gaming platform across multiple layers.

In game development, AI facilitates faster production, lower costs, and optimized design experiences. In advertising, it opens the door for enhanced user targeting and dynamically improved campaign efficiency. At the experience level, it allows for the creation of highly personalized content tailored to player behavior within the platform.

This vision becomes even clearer when examining the company’s current structure. Tamatem Plus, the company’s proprietary payment system, supports over 45 local payment methods, reflecting an early focus on solving the region’s payment infrastructure challenges—a major hurdle for the growth of the gaming economy. With Playable Factory handling the advertising side, the company can now control the entire user journey, from acquisition to payment to engagement.

In terms of financing, Tamatem has raised over $25 million to date, attracting investors such as Next Ventures and Square Enix, in addition to increased investment from Krafton. This reflects a growing interest from global gaming companies in the region as a growth platform, rather than just a consumer market. The presence of these specific names indicates that Tamatem is no longer treated as a local firm, but as part of a broader network within the global gaming industry.

The deal also reflects a shift in the nature of competition within the regional gaming sector. Instead of focusing solely on content production, mature companies are moving toward owning growth tools themselves, especially as global user acquisition costs rise—a problem that has become more pronounced in recent years as traditional markets reach saturation.

Ultimately, Tamatem’s acquisition of Playable Factory is more than a horizontal business expansion; it is a step toward redefining the company’s role in the industry. From a regional publisher to a platform that simultaneously possesses the tools for production, distribution, and growth, there is a clear bet that Artificial Intelligence will be the layer connecting these elements into a more integrated, rapid, and efficient model.

In this sense, the deal represents not just a turning point in Tamatem’s trajectory, but a broader signal that gaming companies in the region are moving from the “Content” phase to the “Growth Infrastructure” phase—a more complex stage, but one with a far more profound long-term impact.
