Since 2021, Middle East and North Africa start-ups have witnessed a new leap in their growth. Although start-ups in the region have seen growth in the size and number of finance deals since 2013, as of the beginning of last year, there has been an unprecedented rise in start-up growth as the incubating business environment for start-ups in both the Gulf States and Egypt has evolved. In addition, new countries have entered the line of interest in start-ups, most notably Jordan, Morocco and Tunisia.

The first half of 2022 was a new chapter in the great growth of start-ups. The total volume of deals acquired by start-ups in the region was more than $1.7 billion, with growth from the first half of last year of more than 83.7%, and up to 125% compared to total funding for start-ups in 2019-2020 in total! The number of start-up finance deals reached about 341 deals with a growth rate of about 38.6% compared to the first half of 2021 and nearly 94% compared to 2020 in total.

In the following lines, we will take a look at the situation of start-ups in the Middle East and North Africa for the first half of 2022, where funding is distributed geographically and sectorally, along with gender distribution, start-up funding phases, and others.

Distribution of Start-up Finance by Country

UAE start-ups have taken the lead in the Middle East and North Africa over the past decade in recent years, Saudi start-ups have advanced and become strong competitors of Emirati companies as a hub for attracting bold finance. In recent years, Saudi startups have advanced and become a strong competitor to Emirati companies as a center for attracting venture capital, thanks to economic reforms, developing the business environment for startups, and supporting and establishing investment funds to finance them. Egypt has also focused on supporting start-ups by improving the investment environment and supporting the establishment of investment funds, and providing facilities for foreign investors and entrepreneurs, which transformed the focus of corporate transaction finance over the past years.

While most start-up financing is concentrated in the UAE, both Saudi and Egyptian start-ups have a balanced share of the size of these investments. However, UAE start-ups continued to acquire the biggest share of total finance in the first half of last year, UAE companies received approximately 45% of total start-up finance. Start-ups in Saudi Arabia and Egypt received 28% and 9% respectively, but in the first line of 2022, changes emerged in the concentration of funding for start-ups in the region, The percentage of funding received by UAE start-ups was about 37.4% and althought it leads the list of the most attractive countries to fund the region's start-ups, its share shrank by about 7.5% compared to the first half of last year.

The decline was in favor of the expansion of Saudi Arabia and Egypt, with Saudi start-ups' share of total financing reaching about 32.7%, a difference of less than 5% from the UAE. Egyptian start-ups accounted for about 18.5%, up 3.5%  compared to the same period last year. In the fourth place, Bahraini start-ups finished at 6.5%, which is more than 4.5% growth compared to the same period. It is also a significant rise in absolute numbers. According to the data of the first half of this year, Bahrain can be classified as a central country in attracting funding for start-ups in the region.

Sectoral Distribution of Start-up Finance

Since 2013, e-commerce start-ups have accounted for the largest share of total finance, but this has begun to change over the past two years. After e-commerce companies are extensively providing services, new start-ups entering the e-commerce market is difficult especially with the entry and expansion of large players in the Gulf and Egyptian market such as Amazon. At the same time, there was a need to improve and digitize the fintech market, this prompted the emerge of dozens of start-ups in the Middle East and North Africa region. This changed the trends of start-up financing to those companies that accounted for the largest share of funding in the past year by 18%, while the e-commerce share was only 12%. Besides the emerge of fintech companies, start-ups have also emerged in other areas, most notably health, education, food and agricultural technology.

In the first half of this year, fintech start-ups accounted for about 38.4% of total finance, with growth from the first half of last year reaching approximately 6.4%, In second place, agro-technology companies came in at about 21%, but about 50% of the total financing received by agro-technology companies belongs to the UAE company Pure Harvest. Therefore, it cannot be seen as a clear indicator of the growth of the agro-technology sector, as the number of agro-technology companies that received funding during the same period has not exceeded four. On the other hand, start-ups active in logistics, health and education technology and software show increasing and more sustained growth both in terms of the number of deals and the amount of funding received over the past two years.

Start-up Financing Stages

With the increase in the number of business accelerators in the region, particularly in the Arabian Gulf and Egypt, the number of start-ups receiving financing through fast-growing companies or so-called business incubators has risen. The proportion of start-up investment deals funded through business accelerators in the first half of this year reached about 27%, however, seed and pre-seed funding continued to dominate the start-up finance landscape. The proportion of companies that received an initial funding round reached about 22% and nearly 10% of start-ups received pre-establishment funding rounds. While the proportion of companies that obtained financing in the series (A) and (B) stages was limited to 4.8% and 3%, respectively, and the financing in the Series (C) stage was limited to only one company.

Funding Disaggregated by Gender

Data for the first half of 2022 show significant progress in terms of the high proportion of funding obtained by women-run start-ups rising to about 93% compared to the first half of last year. The percentage of funding received by these companies was about 2.7%.

Foreign investments reached 620.8 million dinars (MD) at the end of March 2019, up 9.8% compared to 2018, according to statistics From the Foreign Investment Promotion Agency (FIPA).

Compared to the last three years, these investments edged up 37.4% compared to 2017 and 63.3% compared to 2016.

In foreign currencies, foreign investments reached € 204 million (-12%, compared to the first quarter of 2018) and $ 179.6 million (-5.6%), according to the balance of the foreign investments for the first three months of 2019.

The foreign direct investments (FDI) were worth 616.3 MD compared to the last three years, up 10.2% compared to 2018, 39.9% compared to 2017 and 68.4% compared to 2016.

On the contrary, the portfolio investment edged down 26.3% in the first three months of 2019 compared to 2018, only 4.5 MD compared to 99.5 MD in 2015.

The FDI are shared out by 46.4% for the energy sector (up 13.6% to 286.1 MD) and 43.9% for manufacturing industries (45.9%) to 270.5 MD.

The foreign investment in the services sector fell by 50%, from 116.2 MD in the first quarter of 2018 to 59 MD in 2019. The same is true for foreign investment in agriculture which plummeted 89.9%, to 0.6 MD.

Tunisia is targeting the attraction of 3 billion dinars of foreign investment by the end of the year, against 2.8 billion dinars in 2018.

START Summit is Europe’s leading conference for entrepreneurship and technology designed to shape a new generation of entrepreneurs in times of technological changes who solve society’s challenges and take advantage of the new opportunities arising. This year's topics focus on five technologies such as; Blockchain, Virtual / Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence, Internet of Things and Healthtech.

With the growing number of participants, more stages and venture have been organised for the 2018 event. A wide array of activities have also been included on the agenda such as 1-to- 1 meetings, workshops, background sessions, speed-dating and networking events.

More than 2500 participants including about 570 startups, 1040 students, 256 investors, 65 media companies and like-minded people from over 80 countries who came together to celebrate many innovations.

This year’s themes focused on five technologies; Blockchain, Virtual / Augmented Reality, Artificial Intelligence and Internet of Things. Each theme was discussed at a panel where experts gave their opinion on the economic implications of these technologies.

The panel comprising Monique Morrow who has been in the technology industry since the mid-1980s; Val Racheeva, Co-editor of the Female Founders Book; and Leila Oppermann, project initiator of Ada, Accelerate women entrepreneurship in Berlin; gave insights on how to bridge the gender gap in the technology field. They stressed that, while it will always be challenging to find solutions to this problem, women should continue to be empowered, supported and mentored.

The event culminated in celebration of the winner of the Start Sumiteer Award. This year’s award was bestowed on the Lausanne based startup Aesyra, seeking to fight against Bruxism, a health problem involving teeth grinding or clenching, occurring during sleep or wakefulness. Almost 1 out of 10 people is affected. Bruxism can result in facial pain, teeth wear, severe damage and is too costly for dental restorations and prostheses. Therefore, Aesyra developed a wearable solution that helps patients to stop the teeth grinding and for clinicians to efficiently manage bruxism diagnosis, monitoring and therapy. Prototypes have already been tested by volunteers during several nights of sleep, generating bruxism clinical data.

Behind Aesyra were five finalists;

Seervision, a spin-off from the Automatic Control Laboratory of ETH Zurich, is developing a new kind of video camera to allow for autonomous video production.

Vigilitech’s MARTA allows researchers to monitor animal's vital functions during surgical intervention effortlessly and non-invasively and to record data wirelessly with a phone or tablet.

Komed Health offers a fully encrypted and secure platform for instant medical team and patient communication.

Glasschair based in Munich develops a smart glass based solution with which people with disabilities can drive a wheelchair with head motions and voice commands.

Yobs' “Artificial Emotional Intelligence” analyzes large amounts of unstructured data to understand the soft skills of applicants. Yobs Technology is based in the Silicon Valley.

Agrocenta, the startup which is tackling food access and stock flow issues across Ghana communities, won up to $500,000 in equity investment and some unique growth opportunities at the Seedstars Summit 2018.

Seedstars World, the biggest startup competition focused only in emerging markets, closed its fifth edition with a huge celebratory Seedstars Summit. After covering 65+ countries during 2017, Seedstars invited and sponsored the coming of 65+ local startup winners to Lausanne, Switzerland, where they had the chance to compete for different prizes, up to $1mn in equity investment and the title of Seedstars Global Winner.

Much more than a conference, the Seedstars Summit is an opportunity for stakeholders in impact investment, tech and entrepreneurship in and from emerging markets to network and profit from a unique hands-on growth experience. Startups participated in a two-day bootcamp; a private Investor Forum where they had the chance to pitch to be considered one of the 12 finalists to compete on the main stage and attended more than 700 one-on-one sessions with investors. On the Summit Day, the finalist startups pitched on the main stage in front of more than 1,000 hand-picked participants, investors, startup enthusiasts and some of the most prominent names of tech and entrepreneurship in emerging markets. The jury, an international panel which included Benjamin Benaïm, from Seedstars, Nikunj Jinsi and Theta Capital Group decided that this year’s investment will go to Agrocenta from Ghana.

Francis Obirikorang founded Agrocenta having in mind to create an online sales platform that could connect smallholder farmers directly to an online market which has wider geographic size to sell their commodities. According to Pierre-Alain Masson, co-founder at Seedstars, “Agrocenta won this prize because of the disruption they are creating in the farming industry. It’s very important that investors know that talent is everywhere and that the way startups and tech entrepreneurs in emerging markets are addressing the underlying social challenges in their home countries, be it agriculture or access to finance, basic education, healthcare or energy supply is a tremendous business trend and opportunity.”

For Francis Obirikorang, “winning at the Seedstars Summit will have an enormous impact in my company’s growth and success for the next years. I am sure that, just like other previous winners, it will open funding, learning and growth opportunities. In emerging economies, we lack not only the infrastructure, but also access to some fundamental tools like networking and mentoring. Seedstars team is spreading the word about our talent and ideas to their international network dedicated to impact investment and I know I’ll be able to profit from this. Can’t wait to start building on this momentum!”

On top of the $500,000 investment prize for the Seedstars Global Winner, Seedstars and its partners awarded 7 additional prizes:

  • EDVES, from Nigeria, was awarded the Transforming Education Prize, by TRECC (Transforming Education in Cocoa Communities) and School of Management Fribourg (HEG Fribourg), winning access to the Seedstars Growth Program worth $50,000.
  • Finchat Technologies, from Singapore, won the BBVA Open Innovation Prize, receiving an opportunity to participate at their annual BBVA Open Summit in Madrid and network with the most relevant players from their international fintech network
  • Solar Freeze, from Kenya, was the winner of the Africa Energy Prize by Enel X, which rewards the startup for its innovative solution to provide solar-powered cold storage units to smallholder farmers with no need for grid connection in Sub-Saharan Africa. Solar Freeze won access to a three-month programme worth $50,000 in acceleration services.
  • EMGuidance, from South Africa, was awarded the Health Tech prize by Merck. The prize combines joining Merck Accelerator with financial support of up to €50,000 and office space at the Merck Innovation Center, mentoring, and coaching.
  • TAG Heuer, Seedstars World official time keeper, decided to partner with Seedstars Summit to highlight the role of women entrepreneurs in their own ecosystems and awarded Medsaf, from Nigeria, the Best Woman Entrepreneur prize.
  • Alquilando, from Argentina, won the Time Saviour Prize, by TAG Heuer, for their solution to simplify rental process, minimize risk and guarantee rent payments on time, considered to be the one which allows users to save more time of their lives.
  • Innovation Prize, also by TAG Heuer, was awarded to CMED, from Bangladesh.
  • Public Prize: one of the highlights of the day is when the public gets to vote for its favourite startup. This year, the Office for Economic Affairs (SPECo) has decided to power it by bestowing the winner, Junkbot Robotics, with a premium gift from Veuve Clicquot, a company from Switzerland and all the support from Canton de Vaud in the future.

The 12 finalist startups were:

  • CMED, finalist startup from Bangladesh
  • Celcoin, finalist startup from Brazil
  • Agrocenta, finalist startup from Ghana
  • Junkbot Robotics, finalist startup from United Arab Emirates
  • Redcapital, finalist startup from Chile

  • GiftedMom, finalist startup from Cameroon
  • KarGo, finalist startup from Myanmar
  • Medsaf, finalist startup from Nigeria
  • SayurBox, finalist startup from Indonesia
  • EMGuidance, finalist startup from South Africa

It is known that Switzerland is, by many metrics, the most innovative country in the world and Vaud is contributing a lot to this status quo. A quarter of the 100 top Swiss startups is based in the Canton, including 6 of the 10 top best ones in 2017, as well as about 2,000 high-tech companies. For Raphäel Conz, Head of the Office for Economic Affairs (SPECo), “Supporting Seedstars is perfectly aligned with our vision to promote entrepreneurship, which ultimately provide society with new solutions and more job opportunities and will eventually shape a sustainable economic development.”

Besides the Office for Economic Affairs, Seedstars’ mission counts with the support of great partners: Innovaud, CVCI (Chambre Vaudoise du Commerce et de l’Industrie), Enel X, School of Management Fribourg (HEG Fribourg) & TRECC, Merck KGaA, UNFPA, Tag Heuer, BBVA Open Innovation, Continental, EPFL (École Polytéchnique de Lausanne), City of Lausanne, Region of Lausanne, Swisscom and Nespresso. Together, Seedstars and its partners have been impacting billions of lives in emerging markets successfully for 5 years now and it will not stop here. Seedstars has just been awarded, by the Yangon Innovation Gonvernment (Myanmar), the opportunity to manage the Yangon Innovation Centre, playing an important role in the development of the startup ecosystem in the region along with its partner Thura Swiss.
