(English) (عربي)

Present at Chambers' Day 2019, the Swiss Arab Entrepreneurs platform enjoyed an active participation, we present below a coverage of this first event of its kind in Geneva.

(Français) (عربي)

It is in front of the famous Geneva water jet, in the prestigious Kempinski hotel, that the first world day of the chambers of commerce was held, on November 26, 2019. Initiated by the Geneva Chamber of Commerce and Industry (CCIG), with which other joint chambers of commerce are associated such as the chamber of commerce France-Switzerland, Italy-Switzerland, UK-Switzerland and Switzerland-China. This day is a unique event. It brought together some 450 entrepreneurs, nearly 30 chambers of commerce and 20 speakers, renowned leaders from the private, public and international organizations such as the International Trade Center (ITC), the World Trade Organization (WTO) or the centenary International Chamber of Commerce (ICC), all based in Geneva.

It is indeed no coincidence that Chambers' Day chose Geneva: the headquarter of many institutions on the international economic scene and a numerous chambers of commerce, it is a real center of global economic multilateralism and the “Hub of chambers of commerce” according to the words of Vincent Subilia, director of the CCIG. It was the ideal place to bring together private and institutional economic actors within the same platform to facilitate exchange.

Exchange platform

Exchange is the key word for this day. A whole area was dedicated to it: the Village of Chambers, dedicated to provide information and to create contacts with chambers of commerce. Experts in their respective markets, and each having several hundred or even thousands of member companies, they offer a multiplier effect to networking for entrepreneurs who also came to do business at Chambers' Day.

In search of new leads, a dedicated application allowed them to schedule 15-minute interviews with the companies present. Also approached by several entrepreneurs, the Swiss Arab Entrepreneurs platform was able to initiate discussions with several operators located in particular in North Africa and the Middle East, such as the logistics company Aramex SA or the airline company Emirates.

Part of the day was also devoted to the presentation of specific markets. Representatives of binational, regional or international chambers of commerce were able to highlight the strengths of their markets and provide participants with insights into the investment and marketing prospects in around ten regions.

Emerging countries: markets to explore

In addition to France, Italy and UK, the program has given pride of place to emerging markets, with market pitches on China, Brazil and Eurasia. Under the title “The next growth frontier, Africa”, in which several countries are experiencing among the fastest growing economies in the world, was also in the spotlight. Director of the Swiss-African Business Circle (SABC), Michael Rheinegger highlighted trends on the continent: high level of exports to emerging countries, notable improvements in the framework conditions for trade and regional integration favored by the creation of the new free trade area of continental Africa (AfCFTA). As experts say, intra-regional trade between companies in emerging countries will shape international trade flows in the decades to come.

Alongside the SABC, we note the participation of the Africa-Switzerland Business Club as well as representatives of several joint chambers of commerce and indutrie such as the union of the Switzerland-Russia chambers of commerce and the Swiss-Hungarian Chamber of Commerce.

Tools to access international trade

Undoubtedly, they will have listened attentively to the intervention of Arancha Gonzalez, director of the International Trade Center (ITC), on the investment prospects in the globalized world of business, and above all, to regarding the support provided by ITC to the international competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs), in particular in emerging countries, such as in Palestine, of which it cited the example.

To this end, ITC has developed several market analysis tools forming one of the most extensive databases in the world, including information on more than 220 countries and 5,300 import-export products. These market tools provide essential information for entrepreneurs to identify business opportunities, monitor supply and demand trends and compare market access conditions. ITC is currently developing a global online portal (Global Trade Helpdesk) to provide all tariff data and non-tariff measures, market by market.

Chambers of commerce serving entrepreneurs

Supporting entrepreneurs, like ITC, is also at the heart of the mandate of chambers of commerce. Real partners and business facilitators, they offer a whole range of services to companies to connect them to new opportunities, both locally and internationally. They also help to make the voice of economic players, too small to influence public policies, even though they represent more than 95% of the entrepreneurial community and more than 60% of jobs in any economy. They thus promote the interests of the business community in the political sphere and defend the business-friendly framework conditions.

Thanks to the power of their networks, the diversity of their activities and services and the cutting-edge expertise of their respective markets, the added value of chambers of commerce is undeniable. Federating them was one of the objectives that the organizers of the Chambers' Day had set for themselves. It is a worthy challenge.

The Swiss subsidiary of Arab Bank, a banking giant in the Middle East, is starting to provide trade and storage services for BTC and ETH.

Thanks to this initiative, large-capital clients serviced by Arab Bank Switzerland, including business leaders and family entrepreneurs, can now access digital assets.

“We strongly believe that the blockchain will dramatically change the financial industry, and we intend to be one of the first banks to offer digital asset services for customers in a safe and regulated environment,” said Arab Robin CEO Serge Robin .

Regarding custodial services, the bank has partnered with Taurus Group, which has integrated its cold storage solution called TAURUS-PROTECT with the bank’s infrastructure.

Taurus notes that the solution uses the Federal Information Processing Standard (FIPS) 140-2, Certified Equipment Security Modules (HSM) Level 3, and “some of the safest hardware in the world”

“We now have a fully regulated and scalable infrastructure that we will use to provide our clients with institutional-grade digital asset services in addition to our traditional asset and credit management solutions,” said Rani Jabban, a member Board of Arab Bank Switzerland.

In February this year, the Swiss bank Julius Baer and SEBA, with the participation of the cryptocurrency company SEBA Crypto AG, began offering digital asset services.

A groundbreaking survey among 2000 investment companies and business owners sheds light on it.

The term unicorn (finance) was coined by Aileen Lee in 2013 and means a privately held startup company valued at over $1 billion. In 2013 only 39 companies fell into this category, however, by the beginning of 2019 the Unicorn Leaderboard listed 452 companies. The bright examples of these successful startup companies are Airbnb, Ant Financial, Uber, Zoom, Epic Games, Robinhood, Farfetch, Meizu, WeWork and many other companies. The unicorn leaders countries are the USA with 196 companies and China with 165 unicorn startups.

According to data compiled by Fundable only 0.91 percent of investment projects are funded by angel investors, while an insignificant 0.05 percent are funded by VCs. In contrast, 57 percent of startup companies are funded by personal loans and credit, while 38 percent receive funding from family and friends. Based on the analysis of 1,100 tech companies in the USA carried out by CB Insights it is seen that 70% of companies end up either dead or become self-sustaining (which is not positive for investors). And only 1% of investment project that raised seed rounds, reached unicorn status of $1B+ valuation.

Despite the lower number of successful companies that continue to develop with financial injection from investment companies, it is absolutely possible to attract needed investments to a reliable investment project whether it is at the seed stage of seeking funding or has already made it through to the C funding round. Nevertheless, there are some obstacles that might get in the way and interfere with your success. According to the survey conducted among 1000 project owners and 1000 investors from the USA and Europe who have been engaged in the process of seeking or providing financial resources the fundamental reason that leads even credible companies to failure, is the lack of personal connections between project owners and investment decision makers. Middle level executives do not have substance to back up investment projects and if relying on them, the most likely scenario is it will just be a waste of a project owner’s time and money, with zero results, and the project will unfortunately be consigned to the history books.

Claudio Cancio, the owner of an Italian hospitality business says: “When I was seeking funding, I decided to take part in two funding events. At the first one I presented my project onstage and a few representatives of investment companies got interested, they approached me after my presentation and we exchanged contacts, I send sent them all the information about my project and even had a meeting with them one more time, but it did not lead to anything, despite their initial interest and eagerness. The second event I visited was an investment conference and a family office advisor took my project to pitch it further to investors. I’ve been waiting for a few months now but sadly there is no deal in sight.

Business owners agree on the opinion that if a project owner pitches an idea to investment decision makers directly and investors endorse it, it opens the way to obtain funding and increases the chance of attracting investments by almost 100%. But if a project is presented to lots of middle level executives (such as portfolio managers, asset managers, analytics from investment companies funds, VC or family offices) and they like the project, it only means that the rigmarole of financing this project has just begun.

Angelina DiLarosa from Switzerland shares her experience: “My project was presented to an investment company by their employee, and of course it was pitched in a completely different way from how I would have done it, but unfortunately I cannot reach investors directly…”

Why do these situations keep occurring? Why despite going to funding shows and investment conferences do people not find the needed investments?

Andrew Crawley the head of an investment company from the UK says: “Usually people who we send on behalf of our company are in charge of relationship matters, however they are not responsible for making decisions regarding analysing and funding projects. I usually attend investment or business events either as a speaker or as a participant, choosing events that only consist of decision makers such as The World Economic Forum and Private Investment Forum Worldwide.

The feasibility of taking a part in The World Economic Forum has been questioned by many businessmen in connection with the high price which is $72,000 for the an ordinary package and $358,000 for the a premium participation package.

Consequently, the best way to plough money into a project is to establish personal connections with investors, present your project and negotiate with investors by yourself. How to do so can be read here How to get investors in a Rockefeller way.

The VII Private Investment Forum Worldwide was held in Zürich on 9th April 2019

Held for the first time in Zürich, Switzerland on 9 April 2019, the VII Private Investment Forum Worldwide attracted senior industry leaders from the global investment and financial community to expand their network, source new business opportunities and grow their investment portfolio in Europe, North America, Asia and the Middle East.

The conference’s first edition for 2019, which was aimed at providing a networking platform for senior decision makers of investment companies worldwide, banks, family offices and project owners, was attended by participants from Australia, Hong Kong, Singapore, Bahrain, UAE, USA, UK, Switzerland, Germany, Italy, France, Austria, Spain, Peru, Mexico, Canada and India.

About 245 official one-on-one meetings and over 500 informal meetings were held among participants throughout the event. According to preliminary data, during the forum, more than $1.5 billion worth of projects were discussed at the forum, with this number expected to grow further in the coming months. The sectors which attracted investment were health care, manufacturing, real estate, IT, blockchain and banking.

Organized four times annually in key international locations, the Private Investment Forum Worldwide attracts senior players from the global financial and investment community. The forums’ past editions have taken place in global financial centers like Dubai and Zurich, with plans to expand into New York, Singapore, London and Tokyo.

Osama Saeed, General Manager at Bin Hamoodah Trading & General Services (BHTGS), UAE, and participant at the Dubai edition of the Forum in 2018, commented: “The UAE economy is one of the most stable in the region, always demonstrating positive signs of growth, a healthy market to invest in and good return on investment; it also provides an open-minded environment and excellent logistics, with an opportunity to travel East and West in a relatively short space of time.”

He added, “I’ve attended the Private Investment Forum for three years in a row. It is a very successful and useful platform to meet investors from all over the world, discuss topics of mutual interest, learn about the latest technologies on the market and share the risks and challenges in investment that we might face in the coming years.”

Exclusive global financial network

The PIFW’s main advantage lies in its exclusivity, as it targets representatives of the global financial and investment elite who are especially invited to the forum. The participants are invited individually in accordance with their business interests, as the organizers’ objective is to match investors with potential investment opportunities to reach specific deals.

Managing Director and CEO at KPM Asset, Anirudh Tripathy commented:

‘It is one of the most amazing forums, it’s quite private, very well crafted. It’s prearranged, preconnected and assessed. Counterparties know each other before their meeting - it is one of the best parts. Secondly, the way it’s been hosted - each guest is attended very personally that gives a very warm feeling, and that’s the reason, I’m here for the second time. I can see substantial growth. And I believe we should take it to more countries.

The app is a success key to the event. It helps to know who you meet beforehand, see their projects, and background, so you don’t have a blind date, instead, it is a prearranged business meeting, which ensures a much higher success rate.’

C-suite executives all in one place

The forum distinguishes itself with the seniority of participants being c-suite executives including CEO, Chairman, Managing Director or President, while the size of transactions reached at the forum starts from 5 million dollars. Forum participants include bankers, institutional investors, sovereign fund managers, investment fund managers and representatives of asset management, family offices, royal family offices, as well as the owners of investment projects in the health care, real estate, mining, IT, blockchain and banking sectors.

Tahnoon Nimer, CEO at The Private Office of H.H. Sheikh Saeed Bin Tahnoun Bin Mohammed Al Nahyan, and participant at last year’s edition of the forum in Dubai, said: “I’m the Chairman of 52 companies. We are among the top ten firms in the world in agriculture involved in 27 countries, providing a unique product on the market. We raise funds for governments and semi-governments across the world currently expanding in the green technology field.”

He added, “If the opportunity is right, we invest in other companies with strong capabilities in their sector. We’ve pursued opportunities in the UAE, Africa and elsewhere. The Private Investment Forum provides an interesting format to meet people from all over the world and I wish the organisers great success moving forward.”

Efficient networking opportunity

A special feature of the PIFW series is a clear focus on establishing direct contact between the most influential decision makers of the global financial and investment industry worldwide. Delegates are introduced to each other and have one-on-one meetings arranged for them, along with a VIP service. The organizers consider this a main advantage of the forum, which they say makes the forum much more efficient and worthwhile compared to traditional forums. The objective is to allow for the participants to undertake discussions and negotiations both formal and informal. A special mobile application allows delegates to enjoy exclusive access to the profiles and investment interests of other attendees, long before the forum, allowing them to get in contact with like-minded professionals and plan their schedule in advance. The result of such meetings is the radical expansion of their business opportunities, the conclusion of transactions and finding a solution to their companies strategic objectives.

Elaine Chow, Principal at Trinity Capital, commented: “It’s a pleasure to be here. I feel that my meetings were really well matched, and every person I meet is presenting something I’m interested in. A number of them I will consider. I’m pleasantly surprised.

It’s a first time I go to the forum, where there is an app where I can look at the profiles of participants who I meet, it’s very convenient to have everything in my phone.

Being a family office myself, I would strongly advise other family offices to join this forum, because it’s something they will be looking for. People that I’ve met are very friendly and professional, they are easy to talk to.”

A special feature of the PIFW series is a clear focus on establishing direct contact between decision makers. Each participant is guaranteed to meet with all other participants according to their interest.

Juan Carlos Lara, Managing Partner at Point5 Family Office, said: “It is pretty impressive. I talked to several participants, and I saw 2 projects that I liked. They are very in consensus with my strategies, we are looking to explore them closely with my partners. There is due diligence to be done first, but they sound very promising.

I was also impressed with the app, it’s handy, it works well. I woke up in the morning, I logged in my app, I saw all my meetings, with location, and time - pretty easy to use and well designed.”

The VII Private Investment Forum Worldwide of 2020 will be held on 17 September at the Burj Al Arab in Dubai, UAE.

وكانت الشركات الفائزة من المملكة الأردنية الهاشمية شركة داراجتي ، 360 Moms ، Tarteeb ، Takalam ، Akyas ومن دولة الكويت كل من Wakoo،و E-pill Box،و Go Diving،و Ideabot،و Diabetic Wound Detector ؛ كما ترشحت شركة تقنيات التحكم في الوقت، TV UTRACK ، Zerek Technologies ، Envo App ، Sinc Time Clock؛ من مملكة البحرين، ومن سلطنة عمان كل من Telpay، Zayr، Adeeb Kids، PocketCarage، Fastmovers؛أما من لبنان فازت شركة Formidable Industries, Groovy Antoid, Neotic, Lemonade Fashion, Lexyom, Augmental;، ومن مدينة الرياض ، Mutamer ، Pick Logistics ، Maya Clinics ، Vigorous و Antelope ؛ كما تأهلت من مدينة جدة Firnas Aero, Bab Makkah, Men wall, Tagit Games, Passioneurs ومن دولة مصر الشقيقة Epic VR و Garment IO و WideBot و ZeroPrime Can Waste ،و VOXERA .
